Tarun Kumar is the founding Chief Technology Officer of Utopus Insights, responsible for all product research and development for the company. Prior to this position, Tarun was a Senior Technical Staff Member and Senior Manager of the worldwide Smarter Energy team at the IBM T. J. Watson Research Center in Yorktown Heights. He has envisioned and created path-breaking innovations like asset analytics, outage analytics, customer intelligence and renewable forecasting. His passion helped him carry his projects all the way from ideas to IBM products. He defined the platform architecture for IBM's Smarter Cities called Intelligent Operations Center (IOC) and IBM's first Smarter Energy platform called Insights Foundation for Energy. He has collaborated with leading clients including DC Water, City of Cambridge, NiSource, AEP Energy and DTE Energy.
Tarun obtained his bachelor's degree from Jawaharlal Nehru Engineering, India, and took 9 courses in Operations Research from Columbia University. He has filed 31 patent applications and has over 28 publications to his name in the field of analytics and optimization. He has received numerous IBM Awards including Outstanding Technical Achievement Award, Outstanding Innovation Award, Research Division Award and Client Innovation Award. His work on human supply chains won the prestigious Wagner Award for excellence in Operations Research. Tarun is an enthusiastic proponent of agile development, and paying close attention to truly understanding customer needs.
